The German based Nova Institute predicts that consumption of biodegradable and degradable plastic products in Europe will triple between 2015 and 2020.
In a study by the private research institute entitled "consumption of biodegradable and degradable plastic products in Europe", it was found that about two-thirds of the products on the market are biodegradable bags, which are mainly used for shopping and waste collection.
Consumption of degradable plastics in Europe will increase by multiple times
The study found that 100000 metric tons of degradable materials were used in 2015, which will reach 300000 tons by 2020 according to the increasing market demand. The team analyzed the consumption of biodegradable polymers such as polylactic acid and starch based plastics in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and Scandinavia. Biodegradable plastic bags dominate the European biodegradable plastics market.
The legal system and composting facilities of EU member states are either the bottleneck of market development or the main driving force. Michael Carus, managing director of Nova, said it was surprising that the company had found a real market and product focus.
